Solanogantine, a steroidal alkaloid isolated from the leaves of Solanum giganteum Jacq. exhibited dose dependent hypotensive effect in anaesthetised normotensive rats. It also revealed spasmolytic activity against known spasmogens in isolated smooth muscles. The hypotensive action appeared to be due to direct vasodilatation.
