BJ Thacker, BM Trivedi, YD Shah, DA shah, RT Jain, PD Bhardia
November-December 1988, 50(6):331-332
Wool grease or lanolin contains upto 15 percent cholesterol in the form of its ester. This cholesterol can be isolated from the wool grease by several methods, of which three were tried and their comparative yields noted to be significantly different. The isolated cholesterol was purified and evaluated for its properties.

Fungitoxicity of some higher plants against trichophyton rubrum and epidermophyton floccossum.
N Kishore, NK Dubey
November-December 1988, 50(6):323-325
During screening of leaves of some higher plants for their activity against Trichophyton rubrum and Epidermophyton floccoccum, the leaf extracts of Artemisia nilagrica were found to exhibit fungitoxicity. The volatile antifungal factors were isolated in form of essential oils. Minimum concentration of the oil for absolute inhibition of test fungi was found to be 250 ppm, at which it showed fungistatic nature and broad fungitoxic spectrum.

Influence of food on the bioavailability of nitrofurantoin.
AA Ali, AS Gorashi, YM Rao, Madhusudan Rao Y
November-December 1988, 50(6):308-311
The bioavailability of microcrystalline tablet and macrocrystalline capsule forms of nitrofurantoin increased when administered with food. In both fasting and nonfasting subjects the maximum excretion rate of macrocrystalline in fasting state only. Enhanced absorption of nitrofurantoin with food was attributed to the greater motility of small intestine and accelerated gastric emptying with the diet used.

An extractive colorimetric method for the determination of dothiepin hydrochloride from pharmaceutical preparations.
RT Sane, RM Kothurkar, KD Ladage, RV Tendolkar, DP Gangal
November-December 1988, 50(6):345-346
An extractive colorimetric method for the determination of dothiepin hydrochloride from pharmaceutical preparations is described. The method is based on the formation of ion-pair complexes of the drug with reagents like bromophenol blue (BPB), bromothymol blue (BTB), bromocresol purple (BCP) and bromophenol red (BPR) in acidic medium. The ion-pair complexes formed are quantitatively extracted in chloroform. The method is statistically validated and is found to be precise and accurate.

Study of shellac-glycerol esters as anhydrous binding agents in tablet formulations.
VD Labhasetwar, PK Puranik, AK Dorle
November-December 1988, 50(6):343-345
Shellac-glycerol reaction intermediates were prepared. Tablets were prepared using solutions of these esters as anhydrous binding agents (3.5) and evaluated. The esters exhibited excellent binding properties, imparting hardness to the tablets. The t50 for shellac and SG-33 (acid value 33) is 30 and 28 min. respectively. For other esters t50 lies between 38 to 57 min.

An extractive colorimetric method for the determination of ketoconazole from pharmaceutical preparations.
RT Sane, RV Tendolkar, DP Gangal, KD Ladage, RM Kothurkar
November-December 1988, 50(6):347-348
An extractive colorimetric method for the determination of ketoconazole from pharmaceutical preparations is described. The method is based on the formation of ion-pair complexes of the drug with reagents like bromocresol green (BCG), bromocresol purple (BCP) < bromophenol blue (BPB) and bromophenol red (BPR) in acidic medium. The ion-pair compexes formed are quantitatively extracted in chloroform. The method is statistically validated and is found to be precise and accurate.

Semimicro-titrimetric method for the determination of Chlorpropamide.
SZ El-Khateeb, MG El-Bardicy, HN Assaad, AS Ahmad
November-December 1988, 50(6):337-338
A semimicro-titrimetric method for the determination of chlorpropamide based on ashing and determination of its sulphur content is reported. The proposed method can be adopted in quantities ranging from 10-60 mg authentic drug with a mean recovery of 100.16 +/- 0.78 percent and the results are comparable with those of the BP 1980 method.

Synthesis of 1-(substituted thioanilido)-8-keto--3-substituted benzopyridazines as possible cardiovascular agents.
B Chaturvedi, N Tiwari, Nizamuddin
November-December 1988, 50(6):316-318
Several 1-(substituted thioanilido)-8-Keto-3-substituted benzopyridazines (III) were readily synthesized by cyclodehydration of corresponding 4-aryl thiosemicarbazones (II) which were prepared by condensation of either 2-carboxy benzaldehyde or 2-carboxy benzophenones with 4-aryl thiosemicarbazides. Twenty-one such compounds have been tested for general pharmacological properties on cardiovascular system in guinea-pigs. These compounds were found to have positive inotropic activity in vitro.

Antifertility activity of cinnamic acids.
A Kurup, M NA Rao
November-December 1988, 50(6):341-342
Various ring substituted cinnamic acid (CA) derivatives were evaluated for antifertility effect in female albino rats at a dose of 40 mg/kg., i.p., given daily from days 1 to 10 of pregnancy. 3-Nitro-CA., 3,4-dichloro-CA. and CA inhibited pregnancy in 50 percent rats. Rats treated with 3-nitro-CA showed high amount of resorbtion of fetus.

SG Kashediker, G Bagavant
November-December 1988, 50(6):312-315
Substituted methyl 1-acetoxy-3-napthoates were prepared. They were evaluated for antiinflammatory, analgesic and antipyretic properties, several of them showed statistically significant activities compared to standard NSAIDS. The ED50 and LD50 of the two most active compounds showed them to be potentially therapeutically useful.
