Simultaneous spectrophotometric analysis of ternary mixture of pharmaceuticals : assay for aspirin, paracetamol and caffeine mixtures.
SC Sharma, RC Saxena, SK Talwar
March-April 1990, 52(2):103-107
Aspirin, paracetamol and caffeine are simultaneously determined using mathematical equations. The asorbance of the solution of a mixture in 0.01 M hydrochloric acid is recorded at wavelengths 229, 244 and 274 nm. The concentration of each component is determined with the help of three simultaneous equations. Effect of the presence of decomposition and related products along with excipients has also been studied.

R Zafar, J Haque
March-April 1990, 52(2):102-103
The static culture of Tribulus terrestris Linn was established in Murashige and Skoog's1 medium supplemented with Indole acetic acid (IAA) 1 ppm, 2,4-dichlorophenoxy acetic acid (2, 4 D)1 ppm. and 25 ml of coconut water. The 8 months old callus was analysed for the presence of hecogenin and neotigogenin and were quantitatively estimated by spectrophotometric method.

Simultaneous spectrophotometric determination of benzoic acid and salicylic acid contents in ointment by least squares method in matrix form.
KK Mahalanobis, D Basu, B roy
March-April 1990, 52(2):98-99
Least squares method in matrix form is described for simultaneous determination of benzoic acid and salicylic acid in oinment without prior separation from each other. The concentration of each component has been determined spectrophotometrically measured at 5nm intervals from 230 to 300 nm. The mean percentage recovery and standard deviation of content in ointment is 98.86 +/- 2.93 for benzoic acid and is 100.36 +/- 3.03 for salicylic acid.

Cytotoxic action of ixora javanica leaves.
SC Nair, KR Panikkar
March-April 1990, 52(2):125-126
The cytotoxic principles of Ixora javanica was separated from 50 percent ethanol extract by ethyl acetate and purified by paper chromatography using butanol acetic acid water (6:1:2). The active fraction was cytotoxic on DLA EAC and S-180 cells at a concentration of 30;90 and 20 gms respectively. The mechanism of action is probably at the DNA level.

Spectrophotometric determination of ethambutol hydrochloride and its dosage forms.
MB Devani, SA Shah, SS Pandya
March-April 1990, 52(2):121-122
Ethambutol hydrochloride (Et. HCI) when treated with sodium periodate and acetylacetone reagent products yellow coloured chromogen having maximum absorbance at 412 nm. The Beer's law obeys in the range of 1-14 mcg/ml of Et. HCI. The proposed method when applied to the analysis of Et. HCI, the results compare favourably with those obtained by official method. The precentage RSD is 0.43.

Ibuprofen prodrugs.
G Mukteshwar, DV Kohli, RK Uppadhyay
March-April 1990, 52(2):91-93
Amides from amino acid ester and ibuprofen were synthesized. The solubility characterstics and partition coefficient of the compounds were studied. Hydrolysis in phosphate buffer (pH 7.4) containing 0.1 percent trypsin was rapid. The compounds showed better anti-inflammatory and analgesic activity than ibuprofen.

Spectrofluorimetric determination of trimeprazine tartrate and methdilazine hydrochloride in formulations.
C SP Sastry, A SRP Tipirneni, MV Suryanarayana, TT Rao, T Satyanarayana
March-April 1990, 52(2):115-117
A simple and rapid spectrofluorimetric method for the determination of trimeprazine tartrate (TMT) and methdilazine hydrochloride (MDH) were developed based on the formation of base catalysed condensation of mixed anhydride with malonic acid/acetic anhydride and tertiary amine groups of the above mentioned drugs in bulk and pharmaceutical preparations.

Pharmacodynamic and comarative bioavailability of sustained release theophylline preparation.
M UR Naidu, TR Kumar, KR Shekhar, R Datla
March-April 1990, 52(2):87-90
Four sustained release theophylline preparations studied, have shown comparable bioavailability. There was difference in the peak plasma concentration. However the time to reach peak plasma concentrations was delayed with all the formulations, thus showing a sustained release property. All products produced increase in heart rate.

Synthesis of some 4-acetamidonaphthalene sudphnonyl hydrazones and thiosemicarbazides as potential antifungal agents.
RK Khare, VK Srivastava, S Giri
March-April 1990, 52(2):118-121
Several 4-acetamidonaphthalene sulphonylhydrazones and thiosemicarbazides have been prepared by reacting 4-acetamidonaphthalene sulphonylhydrazide with appropriate aldehydes and arylisothiocyanates respectively. A representative number of title compounds have been screened for fungi-toxicity against two species of fungai viz. Aspergillus niger and Aspergillus flavus and the results were compared with that of Dithane M-45, a commercial fungicide. The relationship between structure and activity is discussed.

Spectrophotometric determinations of mianserin hydrochloride with -3-methyl-2- benzothiazolinone hydrozone.
MB Devani, SS Pandya, SA Shah
March-April 1990, 52(2):123-124
A spectrophotometric method for the estimation of mianserin (M.HCI) based on its reaction with 3-methyl-2-benzothiazolinone hydrozone (MBTH) in presence of Fe (III) ion yielding a violet coloured chromogen with absorption maxima at 580 nm is reported. Beer's law is obeyed in the concentration range of 1 to 16 mcg/ml. The proposed method is applicable to the Pune drug powder and its pharmaceutical dosage forms.

Bacteriostatic and bactericidal activities of short and long chain QACs in mops medium.
YB Acheampong, D Wiseman
March-April 1990, 52(2):94-97
Inhibitory concentrations of nonyl (ADB-9) and tetradecyl-(ADB-14) dimethylbenzylammonium compounds produced growth curves which were qualitatively similar. Larger concentrations of the short chain compound were required to achieve degrees of inhibitions similar to ADB-14. Concentrations of the agents which stopped growth also rapidly inhibited respirations in the cell. Both ADB-9 and ADB-14 possess bactericidal properties against the organism in medium containing glucose. The activity of ADB-14 was reduced and that of ADB-9 was abolished in the absence of glucose in the medium. The activity of ADB-14 was 8-12 times that of ADB-9.
