Solubility Studies Of Metronidazole In Binary Solvent Blends
V. K Mourya, S. K Yadav, T. R Saini
July-August 1997, 59(4):200-202
The Extended Hildebrand Solubility Parameter Approach (EHSA) is suggested to predict the solubility of drug in binary and ternary solvent blends. The solubility profile of metronidazole Dioxane-water blends shows a bell shaped curve with solubility maxima different from the calculated ideal solubility. The approach was found better for the prediction of solubility.

Hepatoprotective Activity Of The Whole Plants Of Fumaria Indica
Kurma S Rao, S. H Mishra
July-August 1997, 59(4):165-170
Whole plants of Fumaria indica (fam.Fumaricease) were studied for their hepatoprotective activity against carbontetrachloride, paracetamol and rifampicin-induced heptatotoxicities in albino rats. The petroleum ether extract against carbonetrachloride, total aqueous extract against paracetamol and methanolic extract against rifamiplcin-induced hepatotoxicities showed similar reductions in the elevated levels of some of the serum biochemical parameters in a manner similar that of silymarin indicating its potential as a hepatoprotective agent.

N-Bromosuccinimide As An Analytical Reagent For The Spectrophotometric Determination Of Benzimidazole Anthelmintics
C. S. P Sastry, V. A. N Sarma, U. V Prasad, C. S. R Lakshmi
July-August 1997, 59(4):161-164
Two simple spectrophotometric methods are described for the determination of albendazole mebendazole or fenbendazole based on oxidation of the drug with a known excess of N-bromosuccinimide (NBS) and estimating the unreacted NBS with metol-sulphanilmide (lmax 520nm; Method A) or celestine blue (lmax 540 nm; Method B).

Colorimetric Determination Of Thiamine Hydrochloride Using Alzarin Briliant Violet R
P. S. S Prasad, K. P Rajasree, K. A Khan, M Narayana Reddy
July-August 1997, 59(4):194-196
A new colorimetric method for the determination of thiamine hydrochloride is developed. It is based on the formation of coloured ion-pair complex between thiamine hydrochloride and alizarin brilliant violet R in the aqueous phase at pH 4.5 extractable into chloroform which obeyes Beer’s law in the range of 2-16 mcg/ml.

Extractive Spectrophotometric Determination Of Amlodipine Using Eriochrome Black-T and Indigo Carmine
M Narayana Reddy, G Tulaja Rani, K. V. S Prasad Rao, D. G Sankar, K Sreedhar
July-August 1997, 59(4):188-189
Two sensitive spectrophotometric methods for the determination of Amlodipine besylate based on the formation of coloured complexes of the drug with regents such as Erichrome Black- T at pH 3.0 and indigo caramine at pH 2.8 are described for bulk samples and pharmaceutical preparations. The ion-pair complexes formed are quantitatively extracted into chloroform under the experimental conditions.

Influence Of Hydroxypropyl b-Cyciodextrin On Dissolution Of Piroxicam And On Irritation To Stomach Of Rats Upon Oral Administration
S Mangal, Jyotsna M Musale
July-August 1997, 59(4):174-180
Solid dispersions of hydroxpropyl b- cyclodextrin (HPB), a highly water soluble derivative of b- cyclodextrin and piroxicam (PRX) were prepared by kneading, co-evoporation and freeze-drying. X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, IR-spectral studies and thin layer chromatography were used to characterise the solid dispersions and also to study the possibility of complexation of the drug with HPB. A marked difference in characteristics of dispersions was observed due to their methods of preparation. The dissolution of PRX from the solid dispersion was studied by the dispersed powder technique and also as per USP 1990 which was found to have improved considerably over that of the pure drug alone. Coevaporated and freeze dried dispersions caused significant reduction in irritation to stomach mucosa of rats upon oral administration.

Kinetics Of Release Of Pentazocine Hydrochloride From Mictropellets Of Ethylcellulose And Eudragit RL-100
M Mandal, B. K Gupta
July-August 1997, 59(4):181-184
Micropellets of Pentazocine hydrochloride were fabricated by the emulsion – solvent – evaporation method using different combinations of ethylcellulose and Eudragit RL 100. The polymer combinations, drug load, and pH of the dissolution medium were found to extert important effects on the drug release profiles. Release kinetics also showed a heterogeneous pattern.
