A colorimetric method is reported for the estimation of vitamin B1 in single dosage forms as well as in combination with vitamin B6 and B12. Thiamine mononitrate or hydrochloride reacts with diazotised phenyl hydrazine-4-sulphonic acid sodium salt (DPHS) to give a stable red colour in alkaline medium. The chromogen obeys Beer's law in the concentration range 1 to 16 mcg/ml at its wavelength of maximum absorbance (490 nm).
