Effect of chloramphenicol on the incorporation of L-phenylalanine - 14C(U) into hyoscyamine, scopolamine and total proteins was studied in flowering plants of Datura innoxia Mill. Chloramphenicol, at a concentration of 200 mg/l increased the incoroporation of the precursor into L-hyoscyamine and scopolamine. Concomitantly, a reduction in the incorporation of the same precursor into protiens was noted. An inverse correlation between the alkaloid yield and total protiens was discernible.
