A simple colourimetric assay procedure for quantitative estimation of stilboestrol based on its reaction with sodium nitrite in acidic medium is described. On subsequent treatment with alkali, it gives orange complex having maxima at 435 nm. Results of analysis of pure drug and its dosage forms are in good agreement with those of the official methods.
