Abstract

Static callus cultures were established from the fruit explants of the plant Solanum xanthocarpum Schrad. & Wendl. For the production of the maximum biomass of callus three media, namely BW, BMS and BMSKS were used. Effect of IAA, NAA and 2,4-D alone as well as in combination with Kn was observed on the induction and growth of callus. The cultures grown on BMS + 2,4-D (1 ppm) + Kn (2-5 ppm) and BMS + NAA (1 ppm) + Kn (0/1-5 ppm) in the presence of light were found to be the best cultures. Chemical analysis of the calli developed showed the presence of B-sitosterol and lupeol. The chemical results showed that the different growth regulators used in various concentrations could not change the pattern of secondary metabolites produces.
